A Blossoming Time of Year

These images are very special to me.   The images in this post are mine, and the words are from Heidi at Ira and Lucy, who agreed to guest blog this session for me.

A few weeks ago, Stephanie Mballo, a dear friend and fabulous photographer, sent me a facebook message, “I’m just dreaming of an orchard bridal shoot!” I of course jumped at this!!! “YES! Let’s do it!” So, we started collaborating on design, concept and pulling together our A-Team of professional creatives! As I researched and started pooling ideas together that incorporated our furniture, accessories, floral design by my go-to FlowersAtWill botanical stylist, and local wedding gown designer, Daci -  I stumbled upon a poem by Horatio Alger that I felt so perfectly stated the vision for what Stephanie, Will and I were dreaming up!

Title:     Apple-blossoms

I sit in the shadow of apple-boughs,
In the fragrant orchard close,
And around me floats the scented air,
With its wave-like tidal flows.
I close my eyes in a dreamy bliss,
And call no king my peer;
For is not this the rare, sweet time,
The blossoming time of the year?

I lie on a couch of downy grass,
With delicate blossoms strewn,
And I feel the throb of Nature’s heart
Responsive to my own.
Oh, the world is fair, and God is good,
That maketh life so dear;
For is not this the rare, sweet time,
The blossoming time of the year?

I can see, through the rifts of the apple-boughs,
The delicate blue of the sky,
And the changing clouds with their marvellous tints
That drift so lazily by.
And strange, sweet thoughts sing through my brain,
And Heaven, it seemeth near;
Oh, is it not a rare, sweet time,
The blossoming time of the year?

The Williams Fruit Ranch in Emmett, ID established in 1890, set our perfect backdrop. Our goal was for simple elegance, utilizing the natural beauty of the apple-boughs. The stage was set with hand-selected items from our vintage rentals inventory, pulling in the warm wood tones, soft pinks and gold hues. I added some DIY elements to the shoot – spray painting an apple in a soft pearl gold tone, which matched the ornate frame.

“The flowers that surround a bride on her wedding day should never steal the show, but rather compliment her beauty and enhance her elegance. I chose Lilacs, Peonies, Ranunculus, Hydrangea and Dogwood Blossoms for that very reason. I played off the apple orchard setting and went country chic. The bride’s beauty was softly, yet deliberately stunning, so I accented that with soft pastels, bringing in a deliberate pop of color. The arm band of flowers was as unique as the bride was breathtaking. The fresh idea was an elegant play on the eternal wedding concept: the simple band of Lilacs and Dogwood Blossoms continued in a circle with no end, ushering the bride into a marriage with just as much promise.” – Will Heatter, FlowersAtWill

The day of the shoot was sunny and warm and perfect for the dreamy bridal session we had envisioned. It was a dream to photograph and I was lucky enough to be able to capture it all with my camera.”

Local Wedding Gown Designer, Daci featured two of her custom gowns for our bride. Whimsical layers of tulle, intricate lace details and my word the back of the sleek and sexy gown. Could we say perfection! I just love how the light filtered through her veil! I first discovered Daci at the bigWedding Party Show last January and when I walked by her booth I just about fell over in LOVE! Here was a gown designer that had the same deep love for romance, for vintage, for lace and elegance and we have become great friends ever since! Hair and makeup by Behrens Artistryachieved that effortless, yet gorgeous look.

Oh, these two were such great sports!  The weather was a little cold and a lot windy, and they were so wonderful to follow me through the foothills as we chased the setting sun.  They are such a sweet couple and I can’t wait for their wedding in July!

jonnathan, heidi, and jagger’s sunday morning shoot | boise, idaho lifestyle photographer

you may have noticed a few changes in the blog lately.  i’m simplifying things. stripping away the excess fluff and trying to show you more of what really matters.

and i’d like to kick off the new, simplified blog with this post. because when you’re talking about what really matters-this is it.  family and love and being there for one another no matter what.  and can i also say that i am so in love with the fact that this entire session took place in their heidi and jonnathan’s bedroom?  i love it when a family trusts me enough to do a lifestyle session like this one.

i understand the appeal and the tendency to choose to go to a park or an outdoor space for family pictures, but i hope this session makes a few of you consider doing a lifestyle session.  you don’t need a fancy house or awesome decorations. all that doesn’t matter. what matters is capturing your family in your lives-right now.  these are the moments that you are going to want to remember for the rest of your lives.  an added bonus of lifestyle sessions? kiddos tend to feel more comfortable at home and smiles tend to come more easily and more naturally.

but enough about all that.  on to the pictures!  i hope you love them as much as i do.

oh-one more thing!  i absolutely love that this little boy’s name is jagger. and what a rock star he was! now for the pictures!

by the way, heidi is the co-owner of a super awesome company called Ira and Lucy.  check them out!

SarahFebruary 11, 2013 - 11:47 pm

These are beautiful!! And I love how much natural light just wraps its arms around them. The black and white images are just so intimate and perfect!

Will HeatterFebruary 12, 2013 - 2:58 am

Wow! Simply STUNNING! Speechless Actually! What an amazing photo session… Stephanie you captured the only thing that matters… LOVE! You spoke about getting rid of the fluff for your blog… And after seeing this I hope most people carry this into their own lives… It’s just fluff! Treasure the simplest of things… Smile often… Love unconditionally and Bd the change you wish to see in this world! The rest is just fluff! Kuddos Stephanie and Heidi, Jonnathan and Jagger… I’m blessed to know you!

I’ll do my best to share just how much these photos mean to me… Our family hadn’t had any professional photos done and we were so so sad and disappointed to not even have any newborn pics of Jagger. We had a shoot lined up, but unexpectedly Jagger was rushed to the ER at just 2 weeks of age and then spent the next week there. Between recovering from his birth and then the stay at the hospital and getting over that pictures just never happened. A move from Portland to Boise and job changes and starting our new vintage rental business….time flew by and our sweet boy was already one and still no pictures! Our walls…bare… I met Stephanie and immediately was pulled into her kindness, passion and her many many intriguing layers! (you wouldn’t believe all her talents and experiences!) We have become dear friends and share a passion for light and love! I was so concerned over not having our home decorated enough or drapes up over the windows…or fancy bedding…and then I realized I was completely missing the point! I called Steph up and told her it was time! Let’s do this before another day passes without pictures of my family to cherish! Stephanie worked her magic! We played music, sipped on mimosas and she kept Jagger intrigued and laughing! It was so natural, so comfortable and so amazing having photos in our home! We wanted her to capture our life just as it is and she did exactly that! When she shared just two photos from the shoot with me…my hands covered my mouth, choked up and wept tears of joy. The image of me holding Jagger in the light of the window….a gift that no one can fully understand just how immense… I thought of all that I have shared as Jagger’s mother…all the difficult moments, the late nights, the laughter, the joy and love that is like no other. That image perfectly captured it… We are ordering prints and it’s so hard picking because I want them all! So, some are going on the wall, some in a book and of course my cell phone is plastered with them! Stephanie I’m so so blessed by you! Our family loves you so much and we are so excited for more wonderful memories, for continuing to share in your gift and to share with others! hugs from your biggest fan! As Elizabeth Messina would say, “Light and Love” :)

Wow. Wow wow wow. I love these so much. Everything about them…the intimacy, relaxed feel, beautiful light, and all of the love. Gold star lady.

Jordan’s Winter Wonderland| Boise, Idaho Wedding Photographer

meet jordan.

i know! gorgeous, right? well, gorgeous she is. but she’s also extremely brave and an amazingly good sport. jordan agreed to slip back into her wedding dress for a shoot that i had in mind.  which doesn’t sound so awful, except that it was a chilly 18 degrees outside and, as y0u can see, our shoot was completely outdoors.  on a frozen lake, to be exact.  but i think it was worth it.  although it was cold, the sun was shining and all that snow and ice served as the perfect backdrop.
